Editor’s note (July 14, 2025): I made a glaring mistake during the conversation by saying that Liberia was colonized by the British. I knew, of course, that America was in fact the colonizing state. I misspoke and apologize for the error.
I had a great conversation with
about being morally consistent in our fight against oppression. As many of you, I am an unapologetic supporter Palestinian liberation, longtime supporter of Ukraine before it was popular and adversarial in my reporting to the authoritarianism of Donald Trump.
As a progressive person, I think we should care about all suffering.
That’s why I enjoyed my latest Substack Live with Wajahat. We didn’t just discuss my work in Ukraine; instead we explored my thinking around why it’s important for a Black guy from New York to report on stuff that usually is reserved for white journalists. I also discussed my trip to Palestine and how it radicalized me—yes, “radicalize” is not a dirty word—to stand up against the genocidal regime of Israel.
We spoke for an hour about the state of Trump’s authoritarian impact on global affairs and how white supremacists the world over are teaming up to control the world.
It is our job as progressives to fight back in ways that focus on the oppressor and not each other. Check out full conversation above.
